of santa maria. nbc's mike taibbi reports. >> reporter: the kiss nightclub was packed with the usual saturday night crowd when at 2:00 in the morning, a disaster. the ground floor was filled with smoke. club security initially blocked several emergency exits, thinking patrons were leaving without paying and that left only a few ways out. in the ensuing panic, many victims were trampled, others died of smoke inhalation. witnesses told police the fire was sparked by a pyrotechnics show on stage, according to nick ravenskroft of itv news. >> the stunt on stage with the flare made the ceiling catch fire. >> reporter: whatever the precise cause, the fire spread incredibly quickly as the crowd struggled to find ways to safety. some clubgoers who did make it out, joined firemen and onlookers in their attempts to open new escape routes using sledge hammers and axes, but it was too late for many inside. does of victims were carried to arising ambulances, if they survived. santa maria's major trauma hospital was quickly overwhelmed. >> translator: the injured are scattered around the hospital.

to stop the unrest. joining us mike, live from cairo. what happened in that fatal incident, mike? >> we are not sure of the exact specifics, but we do know that for the past five days there have been an ongoing series of skirmishes in the streets around the square, particularly those leading to the interior ministry, which has always been a particular target of anti- government protesters. the ministry itself barricaded itself for a number of months. those skirmishes have been ongoing for the past five days. there was one previous death reported in the past five skirmishes and now we have another. these sporadic clashes have been happening since the second anniversary of the revolution in various parts of cairo, generally very specific areas where protests have been flaring up and there has been teargas thrown by police with yet another fatality for those kinds of sporadic events within the city itself. >> of course, the government is concerned, the president has called on opposition leaders to talk. are they likely to get round the table? >> that is the key question. mohammed morsi has

to bring icy conditions. power outages and travel delays. weather channel meteorologist mike seidel is in iowa. how bad is this going to be? >> reporter: it's going to be problem on the highways mostly, t.j. speaking of the airports, a couple of airports impacted, at chicago o'hare they cancelled 175 smooil flights that's before the precip gets in to chicago. it will be rolling in the next few hours as freezing rain and sleet. we have warmer air coming in. in the quad cities, we expect the freezing rain we have right now to change to rain by mid to late afternoon and that's the case in chicago during the evening hours. tomorrow in the 40s. chicago will get up to near 60 by tuesday. look at the radar. there's the shield of green is rain and pink, the other color is either sleet or freezing rain. it's heading north and east. later tonight and tomorrow morning, we will have some ice in to harrisburg, maybe the suburbs of d.c. and in to the northeast. so t.j., more of a nuisance on the highways, some travel delays but not the kind of icing that will knock out power to thousands tonight,
